With the soaring gas prices effecting all of us, it’s become more than just a good idea to conserve gas. It makes sense to get every mile possible out of every gallon of gas we buy.

The government is not going to help us, so it’s up to each of us to inform others on how to get our vehicles to go further using less gas.

With that in mind, I’m including a dozen ideas here for you to implement right away. There are many more, but if you use only these 12, you’ll be saving lots of money at the pumps.

1) ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD.

Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer, gas expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening…. your gallon is not exactly a gallon.

In the fuel business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gas, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A one degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

2) WHEN YOU’RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE.

If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low,middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less gas for your money.

3) FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL.

The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Gas evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Some people have been suggesting to lower the total car weight by filling the gas not more than 1/4 of the gas tank. This method does not work! When the gas tank is low, there will be impurities or your engine will not have sufficient gas supply. This will reduce the efficiency of your engine and hence lower your gas mileage. Therefore, make sure that your gas tank is always more than 1/4 full!

4) IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP

Most likely the gas/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

5) DON’T USE A CREDIT CARD FOR YOUR GAS.

In fact try to use a station that doesn’t even accept CCs because there’s about 11¢ per gallon added for that “option”.

6) WATCH YOUR ACCELERATION.

Ease up to consistently match the “traffic speed”, don’t punch it. Don’t rush up behind a vehicle, brake or slow down only to step on it again. Stay consistent.

7) KEEP YOUR SPEED DOWN ON THE FREEWAYS.

55 – 60 mph will save your gas… faster speeds waste it.

LOOK AT YOUR BRAKING FOOT.

Is it riding on the pedal? Even the slightest pressure will greatly effect your mileage.

9) CLOSE YOUR WINDOWS.

Aerodynamically, your vehicle will operate much more effectively.

10) TURN OFF YOUR A/C.

Air Conditioning reduces your gas mileage by 10 – 20%.

11) KEEP YOUR TIRES INFLATED TO THE OPTIMUM PRESSURE.

Is is important to make sure that your tire pressure is high enough. People may think that if it is high low, then we should reduce the air to bring the tires to their recommended pressure. However, I have found that by inflating the tires 2 to 3 lbs over recommended, you can actually increase your gas mileage.

12) PLAN YOUR ROUTE.

It is important that you study the map before driving. By doing so, you can avoid unnecessary mistakes and take the long route. It is advisable that you purchase a GPS system. Although it is rather expensive, believe me, it is a very good investment!

There you have 12 strategies that you can use today! Take full advantage of them and you’ll notice an increase in your mileage, and a decrease in your pump pain.
